Consumption of Fresh and Dried Mushrooms and Green Tea May Significantly Lower Risk of Breast Cancer
Study By Zhang M, Holman CD, et al, Int J Cancer, 2008 Oct 1
In a case-control study involving 1,009 women aged 20-87 years, with breast cancer, and 1,009 healthy age-matched controls, results indicate that dietary intake of mushrooms and green tea may lower the risk of breast cancer. Diet information was gathered using a validated questionnaire. Daily intakes of >/= 10 g fresh mushrooms and >/= 4 g dried mushrooms were associated with 64% and 47% reduced risks of breast cancer, respectively, compared with no intake of mushrooms. Additionally, women with high intakes of fresh and dried mushrooms who consumed green tea daily (beverages made from >/= 1.05 g dried green tea leaves per day) showed 89% and 82% reduced risks of breast cancer, compared with women who did not consume mushrooms or green tea. Thus, the authors conclude, "…higher dietary intake of mushrooms decreased breast cancer risk in pre- and postmenopausal Chinese women and an additional decreased risk of breast cancer from joint effect of mushrooms and green tea was observed. More research is warranted to examine the effects of dietary mushrooms and mechanism of joint effects of phytochemicals on breast cancer."

| What Is Breast Cancer in Men? |
|
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs mainly in women, but men can get it, too. Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancer.
