Study By Wu H, Zheng W, et al, J
Nutr, 2008 Dec 17
In a study involving 764 patients with at least one adenoma and 1517 polyp-free controls from the Tennessee Colorectal Polyp Study, results indicate higher intake of fruits, berries, fruit juice and green leafy vegetables may be associated with a lower risk of colorectal adenomas. Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. After adjusting for potential confounders, the upper tertile for total fruit intake was associated with a 34% reduced risk of colorectal adenoma, compared with the lowest tertile of intake. Similarly, upper tertiles of intake for berries, fruit juice and green leafy vegetables were associated with 36%, 28%, and 26% reduced risks of colorectal adenomas, respectively. Thus, the authors conclude, "This study provides additional evidence that high total fruit intake and certain fruit and vegetable intakes may be associated with a reduced risk of colorectal adenomas
