Intake of a Diet with a High Glycemic Load Linked to Breast Cancer

Study By Wen W, Shu XO, et al, Am J Clin Nutr, 2008 Dec 3

In a population-based, cohort, prospective study involving 74,942 women between the ages of 40 and 70 years, who were followed for an average of 7.35 years, during which time 616 cases of breast cancer were documented, higher intake of carbohydrates was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women or women under the age of 50 years (HR=2.01 for the highest quintile of intake, HR=1.47 for the fourth highest quintile of intake). A similar association was found for glycemic load, where higher glycemic load was associated with higher risk of breast cancer. These results suggest that diet, in particular, carbohydrate intake and intake of diet with a high glycemic load, may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Can Breast Cancer Be Found Early?

Screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. The goal of screening exams, such as mammograms, is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Breast cancers that are found because they can be felt tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast. In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be small and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are important factors in predicting the prognosis (survival outlook) for a woman with this disease.
