An upper GI and small bowel series is a special x-ray test. It allows the doctor to see the upper part of the digestive tract. This area includes the esophagus, the stomach, and the small intestines. Below are the instructions to prepare patients for the UGI and Small Bowel Series procedure.


ADULT:


Do not eat or drink anything after midnight. Do not smoke or chew gum after midnight.



POST EXAM: After the examination you may eat what you normally eat, but you must drink a lot of fluids in order to clean your system of barium. If prone to constipation, you may take a mild laxative.

NOTE: Patient should take oral medications as per doctor’s orders.
Small bowel series may take 2-3 hours.



BABIES: No feedings 4 hours prior to exam..

NOTE: Patient should take oral medications as per doctor’s orders.
