How you prepare for an ultrasound depends on the area of the body being scanned. For all ultrasound procedures, you will be asked to remove all jewelry from the area of your body that will be scanned. Below are the instructions to prepare patients for an ultrasound.

NOTE:


Patient should take oral medications as per doctor’s orders even if prep states “nothing to eat or drink by mouth”.


GALLBLADDER / LIVER: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Fat free meal the evening prior to exam.


AORTA: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Fat free meal the evening prior to exam.


KIDNEYS: 12 oz. of water 1 hour before exam. Do not empty bladder.


KIDNEYS WITH DOPPLER: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Fat free meal the evening prior to exam.



PELVIC: Finish drinking 32 oz. of fluid one hour before appointment time, to fill your bladder. DO NOT EMPTY BLADDER.


PREGNANCY COMPLETE:  Finish drinking 32 oz. of fluid one hour before appointment time, to fill your bladder. DO NOT EMPTY BLADDER.


ABDOMEN AND RUQ: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Fat free meal the evening prior to exam.


TRANSVAGINAL OB OR
NON-OB:
No prep.
