The other day I was at a restaurant and I watched someone wipe his glasses with a used napkin. I cringed, practically hearing the lenses scratch. Everyday people come into the Optical Shop asking how to clean their glasses. There a lot of myths “out there”, so let me take this opportunity to explain the best way to care
for and clean your lens.
Avoid placing your lenses face down, and keep them in a soft or hard case when you’re not wearing them. Do NOT use Windex or alcohol products. During the day, wipe them down with a soft, clean, lint free, dry cloth. Do NOT use any paper products on them. At night, rinse them under warm water and use a little dishwashing soap if needed. Dry them off with a soft cloth. The Optical Shop at White-Wilson sells cleaning sprays and micro fiber cloths that make caring for your glasses convenient, safe and simple. The Optical Shop also offers free cleanings in our ultrasonic cleaner for your frame and lens.
So next time you start to wipe your lenses down with your scratchy sweater, think twice! There may be an optician nearby cringing on the inside, tempted to jump in and stop you. If you have any questions on taking care of your glasses, please feel free to come by the Optical Shop on the 2nd floor of the Fort Walton Facility, and we would be happy to help you.
